White-tailed Ptarmigan (Lagopus leucurus). This ptarmigan is the smallest bird in the grouse family. It is found in the mountains of the western United States and Canada up into Alaska. This photo was taken while snowshoeing at around the 6800 foot elevation (just below treeline) in the Northern Rockies.
