Refuge FactsThe NWR System was established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903. NWR System now encompasses more than 93 million acres. 531 refuges provide protected habitat for 700 bird species, 220 mammal species, 250 reptile and amphibian species and over 1,000 species of fish. 260 of the nation's most imperilled species use NWR System protected habitats. Wildlife viewing is one of the nation's top recreational pursuits. The refuge system attracts more than 34 million visitors annually.
